Frequently Asked Questions

What is the College of Trades Appointments Council (‘Appointments Council’ or ‘Council’)?

All members of the Appointments Council (one Chairperson and eight members) are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council.

The Council is mandated to make appointments to the governance structure of the Ontario College of Trades, comprising the College’s Board of Governors, Divisional Boards, Trade Board and Roster of Adjudicators.

What does the Council do?

How are the Ontario College of Trades' boards structured?

There are three types of boards. The appointment selection is mandated to take into account the diversity and geography of Ontario's population, including English and French linguistic duality, gender balance, unionized and non-unionized workplaces and small, medium and large business environments.

The Board of Governors is composed of 21 members:

  • Sixteen representing the trades, comprising four members appointed from each of the four trade sectors (Construction, Industrial, Motive Power and Service),
  • Four persons representing the public, and
  • One person representing of the colleges of applied arts and technology.

Four Divisional Boards, one for each of the Construction, Industrial, Motive power, and Service sectors, comprise four members each, plus one Chair selected from the sector representatives appointed to the Board of Governors.

Trade Boards represent a trade or cluster of trades. Trade boards shall have no fewer than four and no greater than twelve positions and will be composed of an equal number of members representing employee and employer perspectives.

When can I apply for board positions?

Interested persons may apply at any time – whether or not there is a vacancy for the desired position when the application is sent in. Submissions will be kept on file.

Board and roster members are appointed to terms of up to three years and may be reappointed to similar terms except that no appointee may serve on the same board (or on the roster) for more than six consecutive years but is eligible for reappointment after a one year absence.
